I recently got my PSE&G bill for Feb 20th to March 20th and it was $15.30. Looking into it I saw that my billed kilowatt-hour (kWh) for this period was 0 – zero! The $15.30 charge is from PSE&G’s $0.54/day charge to be connected to the grid plus some taxes, so this is as cheap as it can possibly get while still being on the grid. I was actually surprised to get to net zero this early in the year, I figured it would take another couple months of high-insolation to build up the energy credits, so this was pretty cool.

The actual usage was 92 kWh but since I had some banked it netted to zero. This is nice considering I do have an electric vehicle, so I am essentially driving it “for free” now, and I drive it a fair amount – currently averaging around 8700 miles/year on the Tesla Model Y Long Range.
Below is a chart of the system’s performance for a recent day, March 27 2025. This was just 7 days after the Spring equinox (March 20th) and we’re already generating 10.5 kW at peak, fully charging the Powerwalls by 12:00 (nearly 1 hour before solar noon).

There have been a couple days where the we’ve been completely self-powered – not drawing anything from the grid at all, just running off solar+battery – but the real test will be in the summer when the central AC is on 24/7 and my baseline load goes up to 2-3 kW. But I’m pretty psyched to see how it works out.
